Ramps and Beds for an Old, Big Dog

What actually helped a 120-pound Cane Corso with stiff hips: a ramp he would use, a bed he could get up from, and one thing we wasted money on.

Fenrir is our Cane Corso, and this section is named after him. He is the reason we know which of these things work: a big, proud dog does not use a ramp that wobbles, will not lie on a bed he sinks into, and cannot get up on tile once his back legs start to go.

What helped, in order

Traction first. Most “he can’t get up” problems on a tile floor are traction problems, not strength problems. Runner rugs on the routes he uses and toe grips on his nails did more than any supplement.

Then the bed. An old dog on a thin bed spends his strength standing up. A thick, firm orthopedic bed with a real edge lets him push up instead of climb out. The Big Barker is expensive and it is the one thing on this page we would buy again first.

Then the ramp. For the truck, a wide folding ramp with a rough surface and a low angle. The first week is training, not transport: flat ground, treats, no pressure. After that he walks up like he owns it.

What we wasted money on

A short “step” style ramp with a slick surface. He put one foot on it, slid, and never trusted it again. Whatever you buy, the surface has to be rough and the angle has to be low, and it has to feel solid under a heavy dog the first time.

None of this replaces the vet. Joint pain in a big dog has causes that medicine can help with; this page is about the house around him.

The picks

PetSafe Happy Ride folding dog ramp

Wide, high-traction surface and a low incline into a truck or SUV; it is the one a big, cautious dog will actually walk up.

Best for
Dogs over 70 lb that can no longer jump into the vehicle.
Watch out
It is long when unfolded; measure the driveway. Practice on flat ground with treats before the first real climb.

Big Barker orthopedic dog bed

Seven inches of real foam that does not flatten under a heavy dog, with edges he can push off to stand up; the difference shows in the morning.

Best for
Large and giant breeds with arthritis or hip problems.
Watch out
Expensive, and it is the one product on this page we would tell you to buy anyway.

Dr. Buzby's ToeGrips

Small rubber rings on the nails that give an old dog traction on tile; on a Phoenix house full of tile floors this is the cheapest fix that works.

Best for
Dogs that slip, splay, or hesitate on hard floors.
Watch out
They need the right size and a few days of getting used to; some dogs chew them off at first.
