Closet Fixes That Make a Small Closet Bigger
Three cheap changes that recover a third of a reach-in closet: hangers, a second rod, and bins that stack instead of pile.
Breiðablik was the hall where nothing unclean could enter. A small closet has no such rule, which is why there is a pile on the floor of it. Three changes fix most of it, in the order you should do them.
1. Swap the hangers
Plastic hangers are about half an inch thick; slim velvet ones are about a quarter inch. On a 36-inch rod that is the difference between 40 shirts and 70, and the velvet keeps straps and silky things from sliding to the floor. Buy the 50-pack, hang everything, and throw the plastic away; do not keep both, the mix defeats it.
2. Add the second rod
A hanging doubler rod gives you a second level for shirts and folded-over pants with no drilling. Long dresses and coats stay on the upper rod at one end. This alone recovers most of the wasted air below the shirts.
3. Move the off-season to bins
Whatever is not this season goes into lidded bins with firm sides on the top shelf or under the bed. Firm sides matter: soft bins slump, and a slumped stack falls on you in October. Label them.
